View Full Version : I think I made a big mistake!

I have been using potty pads in my bathroom with my new puppy. I think I made a mistake by using the pads. She goes potty in the house, poop and pee. I leave the bathroom door open, but she goes in the living room, closet, under the bed. My husband is soooo mad. With the other dog I had, the one who got out, and we haven't found. I never used pads, I only took him outside to go. I used the pads bc she was only 2months, how can I retrain her to go outside? I don't have much help with other family members walking her? I need help! Is it too late to retrain? She's over 3months now.

Don't worry... it's not too late! You'll have some extra work to do, since your puppy has gotten into the habit of going potty in the house, but it's really just a matter of starting over from scratch.

The fact that you started her on potty pads probably isn't the issue (although it can confuse things a bit)... it sounds like she's having too much freedom to go in other parts of the house. She's only 3 months and should have NO unsupervised time in the house that would allow her to have accidents.

Just pretend you just brought her home today and start her with a really strict program... the puppy airlift (http://thehousebreakingbible.com/training/puppy-airlift.htm), umbilical cord training (http://thehousebreakingbible.com/training/umbilical-cord-training.htm) and crate training (http://thehousebreakingbible.com/training/crate-training.htm) will save the day.

I think I remember that you were considering having a dog door out to a patio or balcony... is that right? If so, you should also read the dog door training (http://thehousebreakingbible.com/training/dog-door-training.htm) article.

If you're continuing to have problems, check back in with any questions. Or, of course, we always like to hear how well things are going!
